| Summary | 0001099: LibreDWG license compatibility (GPLv3) | ||||
| Description | LibreDWG is GPLv3. Open CASCADE is using a custom LGPL-like but GPL-incompatible license. Please comment with other incompatible pieces, and relevant mailing list threads. I have contacted Open CASCADE and will report back with their response. | ||||

I don't really know what you want us to do here? This is not a bug AFAICS... About libreDWG read this, it explains the whole problem: http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/whats-up-with-dwg-adoption-in-free-software but there is nothing we can do on the FreeCAD side. |

Good luck with OCC! They will never move. People have tried for years to sway them. It is up to the FSF zealots to change the LibreDWG license to something reasonable that ordinary people can use. They claim they want people to be free, but their dogmatism actually hurts two essential FOSS projects, LibreCAD and FreeCAD. They are the ones shackling here, oh the irony. |

DWG is certainly not relevant to FreeCAD. If a DWG needs to be imported into FreeCAD- use Draftsight or OpenDesign Alliance Tiega and covert it to DXF first. I wonder how relevant DWG will be in another 10 years? It's not relevant to my day to day work and I design industrial tooling and fixturing using PTC Creo/Pro/E. |

Yorik, is there any way to change the category for this issue away from 'bug'? It's misleading. |

I think I'll rather close it... There is nothing we can do about it anyway. |

This article http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry/librecad-gets-native-dwg-importer states that kxra is from the Free Software Foundation, and they are talking about changing the LibreDWG license... I wish you had explained that better, I wouldn't have closed the report so soon. Anyway, even with a license change (that is, IF there is a way to make it compatible with OpenCasCade, which looks pretty hard), I'm not sure libreDWG would become much more interesting for FreeCAD. As far as I can see it is unmaintained, and still far from supporting modern DWG features such as recent versions or 3D ACIS data (which would be the only really interesting feature for a 3D app like FreeCAD). If anyone wants to comment more on this, please don't hesitate to reopen this bug report. |
