Summary0001117: FreeCAD freeze after start on openSUSE 12.2
DescriptionI successfully compiled FreeCAD 0.13 from source on my openSUSE 12.2 32 bits laptop. The test command "./FreeCAD -t 0" doesn't report runs without any error.
When starting FreeCAD the GUI appears almost immediately, but I can't take any action.
The GUI is frozen, and the cpu is about 99% (top command), and memory usage about 5%. The cpu usage keeps busy near 100%, and the memory usage increase slowly. After 1 hour it's about 10% for FreeCAD process.

Does anybody have an idea about that ? What additional info do you need ? Any other test I could do. No problem to recompile from source code with other compiler directives, ...

Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

are you running KDE by chance?

Yes, this is my GUI environment. Here is the output of "kded --version" command.

Qt: 3.3.8c
KDE: 3.5.10 "release 64"
KDE Daemon: $Id: kded.cpp 711061 2007-09-11 09:42:51Z tpatzig $

KDE: 4.8.5 on Kubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

This happens to me too, but only if/when I already have the Firefox browser running. If I don't have the browser running, the freeCAD application starts and runs perfectly.

there was a known issue whereby KDE 4.x releases oxygen theme was creating problems, although in oliviersas case, this might not be the culprit.

olivierstas: you are using an old release of kde and QT, which I am not sure is supported, so I wouldn't guarantee that it may work... What version of QT 4 is available?

Dwaldhalm - can you change your window decoration within KDE and see if it does the same.

The final option you can try is setting the default workbench to not be the web startup screen.

I'm afraid I've ruined my testing capability with a software update. After a typical Muon update (which updated both system features as well as Firefox) I can't even repeat the orriginal issue. My window decoration was set to Oxygen, though, and so you were probably on the right track.

First, my mistake. I'm running KDE 4 series, not KDE 3. Parts of KDE3 has been installed as it was mandatory for some of the applications installed. I should have noticed that earlier ...
openSUSE 12.2 is not very old, 2012, the most recent is 12.3.

So the KDE version used is (kde4-config -v)
Qt: 4.8.1
KDE Development Platform: 4.8.5 (4.8.5) "release 2"
kde4-config: 1.0

Difference with dwaldhalm : Firefox running or not has no impact.

I follow your (mrlukeparry) advice and changed KDE theme from Oxygen to Cleanlooks, and now FreeCAD is working fine !

So as you said, it seems that the problem is linked to the Oxygen theme.

From my point of view you may close this issue.

Thanks a lot for your help.
